Karl Marx’s idea that agents of social change are not individuals, but rather social classes, becomes evident when we observe that in every society, there are the powerful upper classes and the subordinate lower classes. Human alienation arises when one class oppresses another. This thought gives rise to various questions related to social improvement.
The “cycle” represents a celebration of the changing societal class conditions. It’s a situation where the upper class, at times, experiences what the lower class goes through, and vice versa, periodically. This serves as an effort for social improvement so that the upper class can treat the lower class with fairness.
This celebration is reflected through the traditional Sundanese game “Paciwit-ciwit Lutung.” Players, by pinching each other’s hands, wait for their turn to reach the lowest position and then move to the top. This game not only depicts the act of pinching but also expresses a sense of honesty between those in the upper and lower positions, allowing everyone to share the same fate.
